After playing with your tetris I came up with an odd puzzly idea in a similar vein. It may play very badly but you never know.
Take 'welltris' and forget the 3D well. You look down on the playing field which is NxN square with the 4 corners corners taken out. All pieces are the SAME shape and the board is resolved by colour.
Play follows thus:
Computer picks 3-5 colours and arranges 5 blocks into a plus sign such that no two similar colours are adjacent. The player has a timer bar which decrements (to simulate falling) and once it reaches zero the piece is placed on the board.
The board starts off blank. Pieces are removed when there are two or more adjacent colours, more simultaneous colour removal means more points.
You can place a piece if - the area under it is completely clea or if the area under it is clear or matches the colours in the dropped piece (they then resolve on drop and disappear).
If you place a piece illegally (overlapping disparate colours) the piece shatters. You get a limited number of shatters - consider it a lives system.
