Feedback request: Montage
6th Nov 2008 - 18:01by sneeze
I've uploaded an initial version of Montage. Can some people try it and tell me if it works properly? Do the instructions read properly? Does anything look or feel silly? I want to get some proper feedback before I submit it to the wide world!

Even just a works for me is useful (even if someone else has already posted that) - I just want to make sure it works for a cross section of people :)

The instructions are fine and it looks great. :)

I do have a problem with the mouse wheel though. If I try to rotate a piece with the wheel it scolls the whole window. I've been using the spacebar to rotate and the mouse to move and drop which has been working fine. :)

The score numbers don't stay on screen quite long enough to read though that's not too much of a problem.

The mouse-scroll wheel only works if the window is big enough to not have a scrollbar (when it scrolls the window instead). If I do use the mouse wheel it seems to rotate two-steps rather than one at a time. You could probably alleviate this by placing the game within a same-sized iframe.

Other than that it looks good and plays reasonably well. I think you need to be very good to figure out how to last a long time; the game always seems to end for me around 500 points. I suspect that you could make it play longer with more shape orientating ability (e.g. rotating in smaller steps, from + to X to + etc would help) but it's fine as it is.

Ooh there is a trick to playing it... You need to try to segregate the colours into different areas - I got 734 points!!

921 :P and I have a hangover and I'm not really with it.

The whole mouse wheel thing is really irritating. Not quite sure why there's two rotations; it sounds like a windows thing since it works fine for me. But the fact that it scrolls the window... that's just broken. Expect a rant on the topic later today :P

You've had more practice than everyone else!

I'm going to have to try and beat that now! :P

I'm at work! I get two using Firefox 3 on Ubutnu 8.04 - suggests it may be a mouse-scroll setting/mouse driver issue.

I suspect that's an artifact of the browser focusing rules.

Odd, since that's what I have, and it's fine here. Anyway, I've added a filter for messages within 10ms of the previous one, which seems to work... and altered the instructions :) New version is online now... Shame about the mouse wheel, though. Right. Better go and write a rant about it.
