Addition to Colourshift
5th Apr 2009 - 08:09by LonePaladin
I'd like to make a recommendation to make Colourshift a little more accessible to people new to this type of game. I have a similar game, and it gives you the ability to mark (and lock) squares as you solve, so that you don't accidentally move something you know is in the right place.

Would it be possible to add something like this to Colourshift?

(I keep wanting to spell it without the U.)

This feature has been on my todo list for ages, actually, I've never quite got around to doing it though. One of the critical problems with it is the lack of a proper interface for the mouse in flash - just got a left button and that's all. Otherwise I'd have right click to lock, left click to rotate (I did this in Drizzle). I could add a control-click, but I'd worry that people would accidentally do that, and not know how to undo it, so I'd also need a tutorial... in other words, it's a surprising amount of work!

I will add this if I do a new version, although possibly with a default disabled setting to avoid the tutorial. I'll have to think about it a bit first though. I may do a version which isnt in mass production in this case - you'll be stuck with playing something here :)

I'll definitely try to make sure it's in the next netwalk style game we produce too - I've got another one in mind that I'll do when Colourshift has died down a bit - and that will give me plenty of time to think around the problems or do it properly from the start :)

Why not just make the cell-lock a toggle? Say, when you shift-click on a square it locks it, or unlocks it if it's already locked. You'd need some sort of visual cue to make it easy to tell which cells you've flagged this way, of course.

I just finished the "lvl 200" achievment and came here to see, if there's a new version coming. I would really like to get to play the colourshift v.2 :P

I've not got any plans at the moment for a colourshift v2, although this is mostly because I'm not quite sure what I'd actually add to it! Any feature suggestions are welcome, though.

I'll have a think in the mean time - it'd not really been something I'd thought about, but given Colourshift's popularity, I probably should!

At first I thought about bringing more colors: orange, brown, pink, black and grey. Also they should mix the same way as IRL:
red + blue = purple
blue + yellow = green
yellow + red = orange
red + green = brown
red + white = pink
black + white = grey
Diagonal links could be another.

I think it's better, that the game doesn't have any locking system. It keeps the game harder.

But anyway.
These are just some thoughts, I understand if you don't have time to make the v2.
