Beta testing: Mobster
11th Jun 2009 - 20:27by sneeze
I really need a lot of beta testing on this one - Mobster. In particular, I could do with any thoughts on the cards and their balance - do they seem to expensive or too cheap? Are there cards that'd be nice to see but are missing? Do I need more of any particular card type?

I also can use any decks that people feel willing to design. Just use the export feature to post them below, and if I like them I'll add them to the game (and credit will be given if desired!)

I've had a bit of a play. :)It's quite fun. ;)
I haven't thought of any cards I want yet though.

This is the first deck I've come up with. It attempts to win by raising your reputation. :)

Stef's amazing deck!,Bar:15,Arcade:15,Trilby:3,Turncoat:2,Assassinate:2,Backstab:2,Raid:2,Drive By:2,Supervillian:3,Press Liason:3,Moll:3,Gangster:3,Lawyer:3,Bartender:3

It's interesting and quite fun. I think balancing this is going to be tricky, though my first thoughts are to see what you can do with the opening salvo. If the opening is balanced, the game seems to play pretty well; if it's unbalanced then it's either exceedingly difficult to make a come-back or you win very easily.

Technically it's very good but not without a couple of pacing/visibility issues. The building income phase takes too long to run through and often turns into a mush of numbers (when one would have done) conversely the reputation-damage phase is easy to miss (colour the numbers or animate numbers from the cards flying over to the rep number?).

There's also a 'problem' with the deck editor in that you can't leave until you've picked 40 cards. It's fair enough but if you're just messing around you can't easily get back to the game - it's really not obvious that you can load the defaults back in. A cancel button or a return/discard-changes dialog would be extremely useful.

I've added a few more features to this now - a custom game selector, some more cards and a few more decks, and some improvements to the deck editor.

I could do with a few people to give it the a quick check - I'm not planning to make any major gameplay changes, but if there's any bugs I've missed out (even if it's just a button that's not greyed out) it'd be handy if someone could tell me :)

If it's a more serious issue it'll be addressed in Mobster 2 if/when I do that ;)

I don't know if it's a bug or not but after the first time I had a play and then had a look around all of the different screens I tried to play another game but couldn't. It started the game fine but none of the cards were highlighted and they weren't playable, even the ones that cost 0 to play. I refreshed the page to reload the game and everything has been fine since and I can't get it to happen again.
Hopefully it was a one off but I thought I'd let you know. :)

Other than that it all looks fine to me. :)
